Be Bold Exercise

Ideas from our members

At our Members Meeting on June 8th we asked people the following question.

“As part of West Seattle Indivisible, if you could do something 10x bolder that you ever thought possible, what would it be? “

Ideas were generated and then rated as “most doable and impactful “ by group members

A group of volunteers (Anna, Amy, Laurie, Tayla) met to sort through the ideas and developed the following recommended actions.

Themes

• Building a sense of community (inclusive, welcoming)

• Engaging/discussing the issues with others

• Taking impactful individual actions

Recommended Actions - Individuals

Hyper-Local Action Options

• Volunteer to set up tables to engage folks in discussion on key issues/targeted topics (North Admiral, Farmers Market,

Alki Beach, Lincoln Park, etc.) – WSI can support with materials, etc.

• Become a “block captain” or neighborhood organizer

• Host or join a “Neighborhood Night Out” party going on your block

• Invite folks for a house/backyard party to discuss current issues

• Organize a neighborhood clean-up or some other community-building activity

Individual Actions

• Initiate 1:1 conversations; be mindful of guidelines for effectively engaging with others, particularly those with differing

perspectives:

1, Identify your purpose for the conversation (Convince? Learn? Invite Action?)

2. Share a few key points

3. Ask questions and be willing to listen

• Write postcards or join a postcard-writing group

• Sign up to phone/text-bank for key issues or candidates

Recommended Actions – WS Indivisible-Facilitated

Organize, Facilitate, Support Smaller Gatherings

• Encourage issue area groups to host 30-45 Zoom calls to share information, engage participation, brainstorm actions

and build community AND identify other like-minded groups in neighboring communities to build diversity

• Host smaller group meetings in a relevant place (i.e., Solstice Park on Solstice to talk about environment, etc.)

• Create a book club (first book: I Never Thought of it That Way, Monica Guzman – local author)

Provide Opportunities for Education/Awareness/Engagement

• Support visibility efforts (i.e., neighborhood tabling noted above)

• Potential Candidate Forum for local races in October

• Organize GOTV activities starting in September

• Build strong partnerships with allied groups and give them “airtime” with our members

• Longer term to coincide with election cycle: learn about Precinct Committee Officer role and offer an information

briefing to encourage folks to apply
