My Letter to Our Members

By Debie B.

This is what democracy looks like….

When you win!

This is a democracy of (us),

by (you and me),

and for the people (all of us)

We are making a difference with our actions. The Mayor was here with West Seattle Indivisible. Now we need some of us to step off the street corner and share some of the other work of democracy.

Ask not only what your democracy can do for you. What can you do for your democracy?

We need to support our vision with the plan. Our roles are varied and different in this.

Most of us see Indivisible like an airplane flying through the sky. It is awesome. Some of us know how to make the airplane. Some get it off the ground and pilot across the sky. We are on the plane (the 3.5 percent). The plane is beautiful and impressive to those that see our march (in the street, in the news) across the sky.

Landing is not optional. On the ground, we need to share the experience and be grateful for the flight done beautifully. Some get right back on the plane and fly to the next stop. The rest of us (members of Indivisible) need to join our families, our colleagues, meet new people and make democracy work. A perfect democracy needs a safe flight, and that is the work of Indivisible:

… on the street corner in West Seattle

… or letting the mayor know we are the force of democracy that moves people to their destinations.

… most of us still need to support the work of democracy

  • in our country

  • in our county

  • in our city

  • in our community

Who will meet with the Mayor’s people now to collaborate?

  • in the care of our vulnerable and even our strong immigrant communities in the fields or workplace

  • when they are attacked, we have been trained to respond effectively as we can

  • we may not stop deportation, but we don’t make it worse, we support immigrants and their families as we are trained

  • make democracy work with your hands:

    • hold the sign

    • point your finger and say No to racism

  • Now reach out your hand:

    • and hold with your neighbor’s

    • let the people know the land we appropriated is theirs and we appreciate them as much as the land

    • let them know our founding fathers built an imperfect democracy with

      • slavery

      • segregation

      • separate but “equal”

      • put your hand in your purse and share what we have

      • we can have a dialogue about reparations

    • raise your hand to volunteer

      • in the community garden

      • in the night-out

      • join the block watch

      • time at the Black Panther’s children’s free breakfast program, it is still serving our community, reach out to them

    • Join the Mayor’s community meetings on human rights

It’s about we, not about me.

“It’s about we. Not me.”
